Stranger in a strange land

I know that some people don't like photoscenery, and in many places it may or may not work out well.

But in some areas you just can't get ANY idea of the countryside unless you do use photoscenery. And for a little bit of work, and NO MONEY, you can get some exceptional photoscenery.

I'm talking about Blue Sky Scenery.

This set of pictures start with this download - Arches National Park, Moab (KCNY) v2.0.

Download that one and the ones south & west of it. Four downloads will give you an idea of the area. That's 14,500 square miles / 37.554 square kilometers! :o

This is a world that you'll never see any other way.

What you see here is only a very small part of the REAL West. And a strange place it certainly is.

personally, I love photoscenery, especially if you are a bit high, nothing can beat it for realism. See also my 'over Belgium' thread. Close to the ground, the sharp details of something like ORBX usually wins it.
Excellent shots btw!

Photoreal scenery looks the best, but it can be very time consuming to make. Especially time consuming if it's all-season compatible and imagery is masked, blended, and color-matched to OrbX scenery. 8-)

I'm afraid that I have to stand with one foot firmly planted in both camps, as it were.

There are places where photoreal scenery IS best (above certain heights, true).

And there are places where well done scenery, such as Orbx creates, that make FSX/P3d a true joy. In fact, if it weren't for Orbx not only would I would "fly" far less often, but I'd probably be doing something else by now.

With me, it's not so much the aircraft that I fly, but the places that I fly to.

The original scenery that came with FSX, while good for it's time, drove me crazy (yeah, short trip). It was just too hard to suspend disbelief.

With the more powerful computers of today we can have very detailed scenery that mimics the actual location that you're flying over.

On the other hand, there are LARGE areas of this country where the scenery is still abysmal.

Utah is one of those areas.

The photoreal scenery "tiles" from Blue Sky Scenery covers very large areas. Usually several thousand square miles/kilometers in each section.

That gives me a simple way of contrasting the two sceneries, Orbx and photoreal.

These are the edge/corners of the two types of scenery. On one edge is Orbx. On the other is photoreal.

If you download just one Blue Sky Scenery tile you'll easily see what I mean.

The pictures are totally untouched, not photoshop.

In these comparisons, Orbx, is clearly the looser.

At other times, in other places, photoreal just isn't as satisfying as this.

Welcome to Simviation, Rony.
What's magical is the price - Free.

There are a great many places that we just don't know about. Flying over these photoreal sceneries is a real eye opener.

These places are just too far away to be turned into tourist traps.
