A bit of fun

Postby Hagar » Sat Sep 10, 2016 10:28 am

I've taken hundreds of screenshots while checking out aircraft over the years but rarely post any on the forum. A little while ago I threatened to post some so here they are. As a keen photographer they're some of the photos I wish I could have taken.

First, a little background. When I was a lad I lived within a few miles of several operational RAF & Fleet Air Arm bases, including RNAS Ford (HMS Peregrine) & RNAS Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus). These are some of the naval aircraft I was lucky enough to see on an almost daily basis back in the "Good ol' Days".

Doug (Flying Trucker) mentioned using the Picasa software to process his shots. It's installed on my PC but I hadn't run it for a long time so I fired it up to check it out. To my surprise I found it very useful for resizing images for posting here on the forum. All shots were taken on my laptop in FSX Gold + Acceleration using the V key. I positioned the aircraft in the sim using pan & zoom before taking the shots so no editing was necessary except for adding the drop shadow. Once it's set up the images are automatically resized to 1024 pixel width & the watermark added using the Export feature in Picasa. They're saved in JPEG format at around 100 Kb or less which is ideal for this forum. No other processing was necessary.
The scenery is FSX default & all aircraft are Freeware, some being FSX Native while others are FS9 port-overs.

Nice Shots Doug! You lived in the vicinity of HMS Daedalus? I was there on a visit back in 1981. I was attached to a squadron aboard USS Eisenhower (CVN-69) and we pulled into Portsmouth for a port call. First I visited the beautiful HMS Victory and took the tour and myself, along with the other senior enlisted aboard IKE were invited to several nights fun at the senior enlisted club at HMS Daedalus. I even got to eat fish & chips like an Englishman in a news print cone. Very, very fond memories of Portsmouth and the Royal Navy folks I met and their families.

An Aircraft Mechanic only needs two tools, Duct Tape and WD40.
If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to - use the WD40.

Interesting story. I'm glad you have those good memories of your visit.

HMS Peregrine was closer but both were within a few minutes by air. Many different types were based there at various times & regularly flew along the coast on exercises. We also used to go to the Air Days when the stations were open to the public. HMS Peregrine was closed in 1959 & is now an open prison & industrial estate. HMS Daedalus remained operational until 1996. The airfield is still in use by various organisations & private owners. http://www.eghf.co.uk/index.php/history-of-daedalus

Thanks Doug. I found these shots while checking out Picasa. They were taken back in January & the result of a little rainy day project to see how many Fleet Air Arm aircraft I could find that work in FSX. They are all Freeware, some being "FSX native" models & well worth a try. :)
