That instant replay thing...

Postby Daube » Mon Mar 21, 2016 5:16 pm

A few months ago, I mentioned a nice little feature which appeared inside P3Dv3: the avatar mode. I described how you can get out of your plane, then trigger the instant replay to check your landing from the avatar, wih free control of the orientation of your view.

Tonight I have reinstalled one of the best (if not the best) freeware helicopters for FSX/P3D: the H&S Designs EC-135. It has a nice 3D model and some textures are even photoreal. The virtual cockpit is quite complete too, and the sounds are excellent. It even includes the rotor blades flap sound gauge to make the sound even more immersive 8-)

While doing my test flight, I made quite a nice a smooth approach and a good landing. I was lucky, because usually I'm quite bad with copters... Anyways, I thought it would be nice to take a look at it again, so i triggered the avatar mode, then triggered the instant replay... and then took some shots :)
That's me in the distance, doing a large turn to bleed off my speed and get the airfield in sight:

And about to land. I didn't take any shots after landing, the view angle wasn't interesting :P

That's pretty slick. I wonder how hard it would be to convert "Avatar Mode" over to FSX? Unfortunately it's well above my skill level.

An Aircraft Mechanic only needs two tools, Duct Tape and WD40.
If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to - use the WD40.

Avatar mode cannot be converted to FSX unfortunately, it's a core simulator feature.

However, you can reach a similar result by using "FS Recorder" (freeware) and "Bob" from OrbX (freeware too). Here is how you should proceed:
- During your approach, trigger the recording by FS Recorder menus.
- Once you landed, stop and save the recording.
- Switch your plane to Bob (Bob is a human model, to explore sceneries by foot)
- From FS Recorder menus, play your recording with "Play as AI". Your aircraft will appear and you, as Bob, will be free to look at it while moving around.

The only problem is FS Recorder is unable to record/replay helicopters. It's a kind of limitation due to the FS AI engine, or something like that. There's a workaround, but I never remember it...

Good morning Stephan... <<q

Again you have peaked my interest in this Game...

I jot down all these ideas and programs I read here and then send them off to one of our sons who is building a motion flight simulator.

For me to purchase everything I read and see here on Simviation I think I shall have to sell off the Old Girl... :o

Wonderful shots and commentary as always...
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
