Not sure where I'm going

OK, so I've decided to go on a little sabbatical. I'm not sure where I'll go. I'll find out when I get there.......I'll try and post a little bit of interesting info about the destinations as I go. This will require a little bit of research on my part........I'll learn something along the way.

I shall be using the trusty DC-3 (FSX Default) with the "World Rally" livery. P3D with ORBX Global Base, Vector, OpenLC Europe and England.

Here we have the starting point: Lydd Airport, EGMD otherwise know as London Ashford Airport. The have just recently obtained permission for a major expansion project.

Interesting Info:
Within a stones throw of the airport are the "Denge Listening Ears". These are large concrete parabolic sound mirrors built in the 1930's as an experimental early warning system for enemy aircraft.

Well done G.K...

Looking forward to see the trip.

I did a similar thing in my FS 2004 many years ago, with a flight along the whole 2,500 miles of the Historic Route 66 in the default Beech Baron 58, describing the route as I went, with screen shots, photo's, and Wikipedia information along the way!

Took quite a few days of posting!

Interesting, though, and wonderful scenery!

I just need to do the same journey at ground level on a Harley Street Glide now!... :D ...!

Paul.... ...!

Also done the same thing along the Pacific Route 1, from San Francisco to Santa Monica, describing it along the way, in regular posts!

I'm leaving Englands green and pleasant lands and heading for foreign climes.

As I fly across the English Channel in this shot we can still see the lights from Lydd Airport, we can also see Dungeness Point. This headland is entirely made up of shingle and as such isn't particularly stable, rising sea levels and longshore drift are taking their toll as the whole headland tries to move along the coast in an easterly direction. The western edge of Dungeness is constantly battered, large trucks and diggers constantly move shingle from the eastern edge and dump it on the opposite side to combat the erosion. Perched on the western beach there is a Nuclear Power station.........who's idea was that? doh.

The locals have been and are revolting ;-) for several reasons:
They protested when the power station was built.
They protested when the power station was to be decommissioned.
They protested about all the trucks moving shingle around.
They also get a bit unruly when the Pub kicks out (Hearsay)

Interesting facts about Dungeness taken from Wiki:
It's the home of the very rare Short Haired Bumble Bee. (I can't wait to see the long haired variety. It must exist surely? )
It's Britains only Desert as classified by the Met Office.
It's Europe's largest single collection of shingle.
It's home to all sorts of flora and fauna and attracts "twitchers" from far and wide.... Why they twitch is anyone's guess (radioactivity maybe).

In the cold, windy depths of winter it must be one of the bleakest places on the planet.

Dungeness "B" Nuclear Power Station has distant memories for me.

I designed the electrical control systems for air conditioning the Computer systems installed there, in the early 1960's.

A time I am very happy to forget, now.

Paul.... Electrical and Electronics Engineer...long retired!

Thanks for the comments folks.

I hope it hasn't stirred to many bad memories Fozzer. The work done there must have been to a high standard because Dungeness "B" has had it's license extended to 2018, so the locals keep their Jobs for a few more years.....well done Paul.

I've decided to visit Paris so I'll land at Charles de Gaul and see if I can hire a Helicopter (or Cholly Wopter as my kids used to call them) for sightseeing.

View of the airport prior to landing.

Thanks for the pics - nice.

But don't forget to give us the ICAO's so we can follow behind you. :D

It really doesn't take much to make me fly somewhere.

I managed to scrounge a flight over Paris in a rescue Heli. A trip to Paris isn't complete without a look at the Eiffel Tower. The Tower is one of the most familiar views in the world, an iconic structure.

Paris Trivia:
Paris is the home of the oldest Basketball court in the world. It resides in the hall of a YMCA center and was built a couple of years after the games invention in the US.

If you haven't already heard of him I'd like to introduce you to one of aviation's Heroes, if he isn't a hero he damn well should be :-).

Franz Reichelt was an early pioneer of the parachute, he was a Tailor by trade and was otherwise known as the Flying Tailor. He developed a wearable parachute which he had previously tested successfully on dummies. He was keen to show his invention to the world so he petitioned the Parisian Prefecture of Police for permission to demonstrate the idea from the Eiffel Tower.
On the 4th of February 1912 He climbed to the first level at 187' high wearing his invention. The police and spectators implored him not to jump, everyone thought this was to be another dummy run and couldn't believe he was going to perform the test himself.

......oh dear.....

There is a Pathe News video of the result on youtube, I'll not post the link as it's a bit distressing (google it if you can handle it). The final shot in the news reel is of some bright spark measuring the depth of the dent in the turf beneath the Tower.

Success is born of failure, or so they say.

Let's raise a glass to Franz Reichelt who made a lasting impression.
