Prear3d Compar3d

Another smart phone piccy taken over Athens during my recent Hols.

I thought I'd do a comparison shot from P3D. Same height and time of day/year, lat and long is slightly out as is the viewpoint location but it's the best I could do without spending all day on it.

I was impressed with the accuracy of the coastline and associated structures....the problem with the sea colours is probably insurmountable for FS developers and I do understand the issues. In reality it never looks the same on any two occasions, wave height / direction, light angle / level variations = too many variables that make a massive difference to how it looks.

Very good!

I'm surprised with the coastlines, in my usual flying areas is not the same, I use Ultimate Terrain to correct It.

But an island is missing and also a lake. The P3D scenery is "light", not for VFR, for instance no small islands in St. Malo, Bretagne (France), no small rivers and lakes in Pyrenees etc.

Yes, they seem to have made a fuss with Athens, the rest of Greece is not so good.

I always thought the shallow "Tropical Sea" look was always overdone in both FSX and P3D......I tend to not worry too much about minute detail, after all, unless I intimately know an area I'm not likely to spot omissions. I more interested in general overall impressions / looks and correct colour is very important in that respect. FSX and P3D have never really got that part of it right IMO.

Thanks all for the comments.

Thanks for the comments :-)

One of the Prepar3d (and FSX) issues that this pic highlights is the real life absorption of light by the atmosphere. As you go higher the first colour to disappear at distance is red, then yellows, then greens. High altitude just leaves mainly blues. As a consequence in flightsims the colours look wrong at altitude.

I'm no programmer so I wouldn't have a clue how to simulate the phenomena.
