When the Cessna 337 came available there was a problem with the gear going down but we carried a Johnny Bar, on Downwind or Extended Final we would open the door and use the Johnny Bar to help it down...lots of fun...especially if the passengers had no idea what was going on.

Cessna soon fixed the problem...

Landing a Cessna 172 at a commercial airport many years ago the Air Traffic Controller gave me the Cleared to Land, Check Gear Down and Locked.

I replied Gear Down and Welded...there was a chuckle from the speakers...

Kurt, that maneuver was not an approved means of lowering the wheels (common, but not authorized.... or so I've read ).


Believable planes, landscape, atmosphere, etc. make me want to shout "It can't get any better than this!"

But I bet someone said that while watching the first showing of King Kong as he was circled by the biplanes at the top of the Empire State Building.

I have always taken the utmost care of my retractable undercarriage......I polish them regularly.



That aside:
Having owned boats I know what salt water can do to various metals. What precautions do they take on old sea planes to prevent damage from electrolysis?
