There are 2 options that I can think of that are plausible.

1: He slewed it onto the land then paused it to take the shot.

Or he started in the sea & ran the ship aground.

I actually wanted to crash into the beach but...it just didn't. It kept going until it finally crashed against one of the larger trees. Great fun :-)

try it again, and when you hit land, try pressing G to switch the position of the gear, and see if that works.
