I think that was around 80k feet or so.

Nope! It's the X-15!

The X-15 is the predecessor, more or less, of the Space Shuttle. The first vehicle to take man into what later became defined as Space.

It was dropped off the wing of a B-52, and engaged a rocket engine that brought it to over 300,000 feet, and 6 times the speed of sound! :o

I prefer low & slow, but every now & then I feel the need for flat out and way high up, and I can think of no better plane to accomplish that task.  8-)
