1. He had crash turned on
2. He didn't have crashed turned on and hit land not water (Water makes you bounce up)

I don't use "crash" because if you so much a graze a twig, it read as a "crash". At least with "crash" off, I can skip and slide along the ground as if it's a "belly in" landing. Unless I dig my nose into the side of a hill, anyway.
