Cool Shots!
I always wondered about the triplane design mentality, it's like, "Hey, two wings worked good, let's try three!" :D

Whatever it was, it worked for the Sopwith Triplane, as the advent of the German Dr1 proved!

Its funny... Everyone thought the Fokker Tripe was this mythical monster in the air and it was a greatly feared aircraft...
But...
The thing only had a top speed of 106 miles per hour. The one great thing about it was that it could climb like a raped ape... and was highly maneuverable, especially when turning to the right due to the torque of the oberursel rotary. In fact, when they could get them, the germans often traded the Oberursel out for the LeRhone from the nieuports if they could get them. The LeRhone was a much more reliable engine, though the Oberursel was an almost exact (German made) copy.
The Fokker tripe suffered from a series of crashed in the initial production batch when the glue holding the wooden wing parts together failed when the wings soaked up enough water to make them fail. Fokker had not sealed the wings and the resulting soaking of the wooden parts under the linen wing coverings caused the glue to fail. Lt. Gontermann lost his life, and even Manfred von Richtofen had one fall apart on him, and was very lucky to get down in one piece.
Also of note, as stated with the unreliability of the Oberursel engine, one of MvR's tripes threw a piston head and blew the cowling completely off the aircraft, causing him to have to crash land.
Great shots!!!
