I think this anime began somewhere in the end of the seventies, and it was always extended with parallel series. So far it's the most famous space opera in this contry. I really have to get some DVDs of that stuff, never really saw it in TV yet...
In all the toy shops in Tokyo, at least half (sometimes 3/4) of the space is always reserved for the various Gundam models (articulated and very detailled robots). It's amazing the choice you get :o
