It's time for the final chapter in our "Best Of The Best Series". This time, we're looking for the overall greatest aircraft of all time. Nominate the aircraft you feel best represents all aspects of aviation. Historical value, design excellence, technology, reliability, looks, think of all the usual criteria wrapped into one aircraft. You can select from the past winners of our series shown here, or if you have something else in mind, nominate that instead. For those of you who select more than one aircraft, I'll only include your first selection in the upcoming poll. Take your time, think about it for a bit. Let's make sure the eventual winner we choose is truly "The Greatest Aircraft Of All Time".
Place your nominations in this thread. Screenshots, as usual, are encouraged!  :)

Here's a summary of your selected winners in the past categories:

I have absolutely no idea! I can't pick just one!

BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde
EE/BAC Canberra
BAC TSR.2
Douglas DC-3 Dakota/C-47 Skytrain
Lockheed C-130 Hercules
Boeing Chinook
Hawker/BAe Harrier
Boeing 747
DeHavilland Comet
Supermarine Spitfire
Hawker Hurricane

Etc, etc, etc...! They've all been outstanding in some field or another. There's more to go on the list, but I'm not gonna write them all!

edit: Better put Concorde first, get some variation in the polls :)

In my opinion the greatest ever can only be the Supermarine Spitfire in all its forms (well maybe not the later Griffon powered Spits ;) )

C-172 (there might be more of these flying than any plane, ever)

DC-3 (how can it NOT be on the list?)

747 (the Jumbo-jet standard)

P-51 (obvious)

B-52 (front-line heavy bomber for 50 years)

Concorde (peerless)

Well, from the poll there are 3 real choices...

The Spit
Concorde
Dc-3

...so, I have to go with the Spit... :)

I nominate the Hawker Hurricane - although rather chunky, it handled well and was able to take a lot that was thrown at it. I think it looked very appealing too.... :)

I still can't believe the Typhoon is on this list, nothing special when compared to others in it's category IMHO.

Anyway, for me it was a tough choice between Concorde and Spitfire however what the Spit acheived in it's life just edged it ahead for me, so my nominee is...

Spitfire

Definitely Concorde

If you think of it..

As of yet if one the other birds retired there always came a better version or evolution. for instance the spit won't match up against the EFA... the DC-3 won't carry as much as the C-17 ...

I don't see an improvement on Concorde yet??

In fact the only time that mankind took a step backwards in technology was with the retirement of Concorde.

That's it I must do a Concorde thread soon!!
