No it isn't...for starters...it's not called a Douglas...it's called a Lisunov :P :P

And if it's built under contract from the Douglas DC-3...shouldn't it be the same thing...which means that you are saying that the DC-3 isn't successful...tut tut...and there I was thinking that you loved the DC-3 ::)

Okay, The Li-2 is the same construction.  However, Liusenov did a crappy job and their Li-2 was not nearly as successful as the DC-3.  It is the same thing, as it is the same design, but building methods may have been different.  You dont see Li-2s flying around as much today as DC-3s

Its a reverse engineered copy of the DC-3,except it has different engines.
Just like the Tu-4 is a copy of the B-29 right down to the repair patches

I nominate ummmmmm.........

737 hands down!  Over 6,000 sold, over 5,000 delivered.  A little biased?  Yes I am.  I just happen to be a Boeing engineer here in Renton, WA and I watch 737's fly out of KRNT all day from my office window.  Tough job, I know!   ;D

Li-2 (AKA PS-84) is a semi-licensed copy of the DC-3. The russian builders did visit the factory, but the legal status of the copy is not clear.

Depending on what type of it you see, there are some differences.

All Li-2's have more windows in the cockpit.
Most of the production ones have 'Arctic' cowlings that can be shut completely (HA-LIX doesn't have these, RA-1300K has them)
Engines are different (either a 1000 hp one row radial or a 1300hp M-82 in the later ones)

And why there aren't much of them still flying... Climate and the way these were used. Before the An-2 the only thing available for Siberia was the Li-2, and they probably used them to the last mile they could get out of the airframe.

And for the record... they even used 2 Lancaster bombers for passenger traffic until the 1950's

To break away from the DC-3 debates for a minute, I nominate the Wright Flyer. If it were not for this lightweight little miracle, neither the DC-3, nor any other of our nomiations would even exist. In my opinion, you can't beat the one that started it all, no matter how successful it's descendants were.
