The ultimate Toy: The amazing Lightning F3

Postby Souichiro » Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:52 pm

Imagine taking two really powerfull engines.... Stacking them on top of each other. lengthening the fusuelage to include some fuel and space for the pilot. Stick insanely swept wing and stuff on it and what do you get?

..:: PURE JOY ::..

I don't know... ???  :-/  not too keen on the externals being on top of the wings like that. I like the sleek look and that to me just looks like they ran outta room to put 'm... but it's all in everyone's opinions

Thanks! And they didn't have more room insinde ;D But basically they're like droptanks but instead of underneath the wing they're on top of it.

The Lightning was a thirsty beast, those drop tanks were necessary!  At idle, it consumed 7 gallons a minute.  On reheat, it was 14 gallons per second  :o

But the result was incredible power - pilots had to climb steeply to avoid sonic booms over populated areas on the way up!

Late last year a Lightning in Cape Town set a new time-to-height record by going from a standing start on the runway to 29,800ft (higher than Mt Everest) in 103 seconds.  And the pilot was disappointed because one of the reheats had a flame-out on the way up, otherwise it would have been faster.  Not bad for Cold War technology!
