EQDC3: Last Leg, part 4
At 1720, I pass Pastaza, and change course for Marta. Still not a peep from the Marta VOR- mountains must be blocking it. ATC has me climb, and climb, and climb... soon we're at 16,000. I spy Mt. Chimborazo off to the SW...

The mighty volcano is quite impressive , even in the darkening gloom...ATC brings me back down to 12,000 after it falls astern.

The sunset is smothered by thick clouds.Getting dark in here... I decide it's time to turn on the panel lights.

Soon the ground becomes visible, but the western horizon is lost in a deep gray blur.

But the sun pops out to say goodnight, just as I'm given my approach instructions. I'm told to descend and expect an ILS approach for 11.

I ask for a VOR/DME approach instead; EQDC3 has no ILS. No DME either, but I know the VOR is right at the approach end of 11. And I think I'll have extra fuel to deal with a missed if the runway is socked in. Down I go, into a thick layer of clouds.

Looks like it could be very bad visibility at Marta... I can't see any lights through the layer below as I approach the city outskirts.

ATC calls my distance to the field for me and assigns me to 2100... I descend, drop flaps and gear, and settle in on my localizer approach.

Next: The End!!
