EQDC3: Leg 10, part 3

Postby beaky » Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:55 pm

I sit back and enjoy a snack and a cup of coffee as the sun slides behind the clouds... starting to get used to spending my days sitting in this seat.

Pretty smooth going now, sliding through the darkness with a solid deck of clouds below.

Finally I hear the Morse ID for Macapa: not sure of my range, but the fuel consumption is good. Looks like I'll make it.

Image

Soon after, I receive approach instructions from ATC. since I'm being vectored in at this point, i take a peek at the map: a bit south of course, but I wanted to cross the equator anyway, and somehow screwed up, thinking a beeline to Macapa from Sao Tome would do that for me...

Image

Okay, here we go: gear and flaps, approach power settings... EQDC3 is fat with almost 3 hrs' worth of fuel; no worries there.

Image

ATC calls my last turn, and there's Macapa International embedded in the clag...

Dagnabbit, I'm high again on final. But I'm learning how to get her down without speeding up... this should work out fine.

Image

It's a normal DC3 landing for me: hunting and rocking as I try to line her up in the flare.

Image

Arrival time is almost exactly 14 hours from departure...  Not bad. Still can't seem to plan properly to arrive in daylight, but no matter.
Here's the map view of my IFR (visual)approach:

Well, that's the last of the great oceans to cross- and just one more continent to go!!

Next: Last Leg of the Great DC-3 RTW-at-the-Equator tour!!

Almost there. You're doing good. I'm firing up for another leg and an interlude part on mine, just to help my storyline along.

With the DC-3 (and anything that uses an ADF radio with a signal strength gauge): range is directly related to the antenna swing. small deviation=far, big deviation=close
Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and [url=http://an24.uw.hu/]An-24RV[/ur

Well, duh! ;D
But unless you can tune two different stations to plot an intersection, you can't tell exactly how far or how close...
Enroute on this journey, unless passing directly over a station, I've been using NDBs and VORs just to determine my progress westward- when I pass the station, I know pretty much that I'm as far west as the beacon.
Had I got charts of the whole route, I could probably have used VORs with NDBs to plot intersections... but I didn't feel like buying al those charts for this.
Next time I do something like this, I'll either use a plane with DME or go without radios altogether... but not the GPS. That's just too damn easy.
;D
