Tour du Afrique part I

Postby Carlo » Sat Sep 24, 2005 4:10 am

Hi all,

Since there are some new RTW flights posted here I decided to start another one myself. Not wanting to copy anyone I started a trip across the African continent.

First flight is a short hop from Alexandria - Egypt to Cairo West - Egypt.

Approaching Cairo. If you look well you'll see the pyramids in the background.

Cairo West is probably the most empty airfield in the world. No parking, two runways and one tower.

Next hop? Don't know yet.

Crash ;)

Nice start to a different trip, but......you must be real patient to fly a 172 across Africa?!! I couldn't do that!!

It's a great idea, though there's not so much scenery for Africa as elsewhere. Holger Sandman has a mesh for Namibia, there's the Victoria Falls and some good South African stuff like Cape Town etc... don't know of too much else. But that's where your heart is, I think, Africa...?

I just finished crossing Africa at the equator (Eldoret-Port Gentil) and found that with just the SRTM mesh, it's very pretty. Weird anomaly in the mountains near Lake Edward, but overall very nice.
Which way are you going to cross Africa? South? If so, plan to go thru Zambia- there's a nice little waterfall there that's very pretty from the air.

Hi guys,

Krigl, there is enough scenery in Africa, you just have to look for it. It's a bloody big continent and they didn't build everything in one area. And it's true that I love Africa.

Rottydaddy, I don't know which route I will take yet. For now I'll make my way south. And don't worry, I know about that small splash of water in Zambia. It's the Victoria falls.

Thanks for the comments guys,

Crash ;)

Sounds cool... I'm getting into 172s at the moment too, there's some nice repaints out there.... but Africa is vast, are you going to 172 all the way? And in real time? Actually it sounds like a good excuse to post some shots of rarely seen African airlines....classic old jets and propliners....I'm looking forward to this series a lot, to see what you come up with :)

Oh yes, I forgot to complement you on the pics, some of them are Very nice!
