saab allways seems to produce top notch fighters but thye never do very well in the export market.

Never did very well. Since the BAES partnership with the Gripen they've had a lot more orders. We may also see them regularly in the UK skies ina few years...

Where can it be found?  Does it have a VC?
My first flight in a 172 on August 20, 2004

Too bad its already happening all around the world...

The Gripen is excellent all around, IMO 8) and one of my favorits... :)

That thing can take down a Eurofighter or a Fulcrum with out any trouble, and would pose a good fight against the F/A-22 8)

Mmm, if that was the case (which it isn't) then I expect BAES would have bought the project outright and called it the SAAB (Eurofighter) Griffon ;)...

I expect the Gripen is probably a (technological) match for the Rafale, but in a fight with the Typhoon or F-22, 9 times out of ten it would never have known they were there (unless the Typhoon or F-22 were operating under some ridiculous rules of engagement)... ;D

Err no, Dec '89 if memory serves. Went into service with the SAF in '96.
I saw some flying 2 years ago at the Hungarian National Airshow, and I have to say I was impressed. An amazing show and a superb aircraft.
The main reason Saab don't have a great export history is due to their government and how much they value their neutrality. A little awkward for Swedish weapons manufacturers.
