Just curious...

Exactly how effective was that plane in a fight?

Nothing at the time could catch it 8)

And nothing in current service can catch it either. :)

It can out run an F14 and can out turn an F16. British aero engineering at it's absolute best.

:'(

Ahh... memories, sweet memories.

When I was a young lad in me prime the company I worked for at the time had 3 main office units - in London, Norwich and Hull. To get folks around who had meetings, they ran a Navajo on a triangular service, mornings from Norwich to Northolt and then on to Hull (Leconfield!) and back in the evening.

One evening I was waiting on the tarmac at Leconfield for the Navajo when there was the most incredible roar that you have ever heard. A Lightning appeared from nowhere manoeuvered a bit over the field and then just shot totally vertically (literally) upwards and disappeared into the cloud until eventually it was inaudible.

I have never seen anything like it since.

Then our Navajo arrived and took us home.

Lightnings and Leconfield are now both long gone...

Ah yes, JordanJ must be informed that the Lightning could accelerate through mach 1 in a 45 degree climb. ;D

Speedwise though it was left for dust by the TSR2.
