Waiting for the Lobotomites
We ended un staying in New Bern for a day. Dee Dee has an old high-school friend who lives here. The thing about this friend is that she's a born-again...the kind that makes me nervous.
I have nothing against christians per se, but many born-agains are like dry alcoholics. They think they have all the answers, it's their mission to save the world, and they want to convert you (or make you go away).
Fortunately, Dee Dee's friend (Suzie) looked fearfully at me as if I was a dog that would bite her after we talked a bit. Went something like this:
Suzie: Have you taken the Lord as your savior?
Me: Depends on what you mean by that...
Suzie: It means have you recieved Jesus?
Me: Depends on what you mean by that...
Suzie: I mean...do you believe Jesus is lord?
Me: Depends on what you mean by that...
As a rule...born-agains don't like explaining or examining what they mean.
After a bit of this, Suzie took Dee Dee aside. I didn't hear what they said (too busy looking the Renegade over), but Russel came over and asked if I would mind letting them have some time alone with Suzie...he told me later that Suzie had said something like "I don't want that heathen under my roof!"
I wasn't put out...I had already seen something infinitely more interesting...

The plane is a Stolp Starduster...its owner Barry was just coming down from practice...rolling up as Dee Dee and Suzie were having thier little palaver.
After they left we got to talking planes. He took an interest in my Renegade too. He offered to let me give his Starduster a try...
Well, when someone offers so forcefully, I musn't refuse!

After my little joyride, Barry and I talked some more. He asked if I was friends with Suzie. I told him I wasn't. Apparently Barry is one of Suzie's targets for conversion. "I wish we could get that woman some therapy so she'd leave the rest of us alone" he said. We both had a laugh at that!
I spent the rest of the afternoon planning the next leg to Augusta then went to a motel to rest...
