No,that's me.

James Garner's character did steal the airplane and ended up having engine trouble.  They were captured after the plane crashed.  The Great Escape is a Great movie, with lots of Great actors.

The problem with stealing the plane is you don't know how much gas is in it.  So when you are running from the Nazis and you hear sputter, sputter, sputter...  Stealing a plane became the bad choice....
