On My Way (Don't Know Where I'm Going) 10

When I landed here a few days ago, I had a tricky time finding the parking as the airport was completely different from the chart I was looking at. After a while, I realized why! I had the chart for KRWL and I was at KWRL! I was in Worland not Rawlins! Heh...good thing I wasn't flying charter
.
Well, the weather has been great so far today. If it stays great, I think I'll leave tomorrow morning...
I filed an IFR plan from here to Jackson that I could activate, just in case the weather got nasty (though I would fly VFR if I could...more flexible that way!)

Taxiing off early the next morning...about 4:30 am.

And heading west over Worland...

Soon after I took that last shot, something about not getting Devil's Tower began to nag at me. It felt like unfinished business. Well, the great thing about my position is that I can follow my impulses!
So I headed into the sunrise...

South of Wy14 is where to find Devil's Tower. I had hoped to get it with the sunrise behind it, but this shot through the mist works well too!

Saaayyy...I thougt that Devil's Tower was flat on top
As I was heading back to Gillette, I noticed that the light was getting better. A small part of me was thinking about turning back to try for that sunrise shot. The Rational part (and rest of me was saying "Turn back when you are this close to Gillette for another low-flying shot, what are you insane!?"

Yep, I'm insane...

Got that shot too!

Since that little landing incident, I've always been a bit leery of landing here. I'm on approach to Runway 34 with IFR set. Good thing too, the approach is a bit foggy.

When I popped out of the fog, there was the runway...I was on the glide path as far as altitude goes, but not direction, and going waaaay too fast
. Tank Gott for the Speed Brake on this thing. I had my hands full on that one, between getting down (but not too fast), and using the rudder to right my direction. In the end, I got down okay, just had to come in high...

Time for breakfast and some socializing! I heard that there's some gliders available for rent up at IPY Ranch from two other amateur pilots. Eric and Larry both work for the Massachusetts school system (one is a teacher and the other is an administrator of some sort). Anyways, they're on summer vacation and come out west every year. I may go along with them...I've never flown a glider before
By the way, the first chapter is here.
