Air Transat A330-200

Postby Dannyboy » Thu Jun 24, 2004 9:16 pm

After watching the National Geographic special on the Air Transat flight that ran out of fuel on its way to Lisbon from Toronto, I downloaded this Air Transat A330-200. A nice model by posky - enjoy

The pilot glided the airplane down from nearly 39,000 ft to make a emergency landing at a little over 200 kts, he made it and blew only 8 of the twelve tires.  8)  ;D

Great shots!

I've seen that documentary... Skillfull peace of flying by the captain but serious dumbass mistake to use "almost"-fitting spareparts in a plane-engine...

I saw that program too, while I was in Amsterdam. Really interesting how parts which were only slightly different to the original (I think it was less than a mm out) could cause the fuel leak. Then the cross-feed was turned on ( I think), the fuel ran out and they lost power. It was interesting to see how Airbus install that little fan that comes out to provide power for the aircraft, they think of everything

Is that the one where they landed at that one airfield (a bunch of people attending a car show scrambled to get their cars off the runway when they saw the plane coming in)?

I also think that the front gear didn't get locked down, so the nose came down on the runway.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else...

I downloaded this one at www.projectopensky.com -
you will need the no vc (virtual cockpit) model and the textures for Air Transat, and your favorite 2 engine airbus panel - I could not get the guage file to work to use the virtual cockpit

yeah you're thinking of the "Gimli glider", the Air Canada 767 which ran out of fuel in mid air while flying from Ottawa to Edmonton.
The captain manage to glide the aircraft down safely to a closed airfield (which happened to host a car show that day, as you mentioned).

Since they had no fuel to power the engines (subsequently the generators), there wasn't enough hydraulic pressure (RAT power wasn't sufficient) to extend the gear, but luckily they were automaticly extended by gravity, which they are designed to do, but the nosewheel wasn't fully down and caved in under the pressure form the aircraft body during touchdown...
