One of the most bazar....

Postby codered » Fri Apr 30, 2004 12:31 am

... missions I have ever flown.  I will let the picks tell the story.... ;D

I am flying along at about 10,000 ft shooting Lightnings left and right.  ;D

Image

Another good kill. ;D

Then I shot off this guys tail, and do you think he would go down.  I was so amazed that I had to fly along side of him for a while.  The whole time I am wondering how he is able to climb and decent without an elevator?  Possibly power changes.  I would have to think to nurse this airplane back home would be nearly impossible.  I can remember seeing images of B-17's all shot to heck and they still made it home.  So maybe it is possible.  Anyway, I gave the pilot a thumbs up and salute, and headed for home.

Ben,this was not that unusual during the world wars.
I've read about an incident where a Fw-190 pilot met a P-47 which was damaged, out of ammo and on its way home to England. The German came from an air battle, too and was almost out of ammo as well.
First, he emptied his remaining ammo into the american fighter. Well,it still flew and so the German joined up on the Thunderbolt's side and escorted him about halfway down the channel before heading home.

Friendly gestures, like pilots saluting each other after a nice dogfight (without result) or waving each other were quite common.

It's the case of old World War One espirit d'corps

I've seen several shots of Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain returning with half or practiacly no rudder and tail. Several B-17's as someone said before missing whole engines, and fins. It's just a case of whether or not the pilot and it's crew is good enough to nurse the baby home. There were many cases of German pilots shooting at parachuted British pilots during the Battle of Britain. Simply because the British if parachuted would be safe from capture and so would return to fight another day. The British wouldn't shoot parachuting Gerrys because they needed info from them.
A Fighter Pilot is all balls and no forehead. If he thinks at all he thinks he is immortal, Gods gift to the world, to his plane and to his women.

I don't believe that Germans ever shot Britons after they had parachuted.  ::)

I don't think any aircraft could fly without a tail even with power adjustments. Remember that the elevator is the single most important control surface. There's also the simple fact that the aircraft would be off balance and go into a nose dive.

I think Orenda is right, no stabiliser would certainly result in an immediate dive out of control, the lift forces on the wing will pitch the plane down. This incident is just a sim thing.

In CFS2, a Wildcat will merrily fly along with both wings shot off nearly to the spar stubs!

It's good to watch though.  ;)

Well if I were you, I would've shot him down, he certainly is a veryexperienced piot and don't want him to come back one day and shoot me down.

While I was in the 8th Airforce museam couple of years back, I learned about how one b-17 got shot up really bad by german flak, and/or fighters, but this pilot's buddy was flying another b-17 and decided to give him a piggy back ride outta germany, so the first b-17 just knida laied on top of the second, but that was not suppose to happen and when the tow b-17s made contact the second one lost 2 engines and half of its rudder, so basically 2 b-17s made it back with 2 engines, 1 1/2 of a rudder, 1 (maybe another 2/3) pair of wing, no alerons (they were on top of each other so neither could roll, otherwise one would fall off), and little elevator control, and they both landed saftly. Strange but ture.

Really? I learned that most Gerrys were stuck once in their plane and that in the Battle of Brit. most pilots if not nearly all of them died once shot down. The brits on the other hand recovered about 50% of their men.

Is that correct?

P.S: Ever heard of the Bader/Galland story?
