Ferrying a Junkers JU-52 - Part 2

Postby BFMF » Sat Feb 14, 2004 6:32 pm

As soon as the tanks were filled, I got a weather update, filed my flightplan, and departed Unalaska at 2330Z.

I set a course for Port Heiden (PAPH), via Cold Bay (CDB) and Sand Point (PASD) for a total of 348 nm. Besides some scattered clouds and some occasional light turbulence, things went well as I watched the islands go by. For some reason, the autopilot was acting up on me so flying the aircraft by hand kept me busy.

Soon after I passed PASD, I picked up a 30 knot tailwind that stayed with me untill I neared Port Heiden, when I started to encounter more clouds, and medium to severe turbulence. I tuned my radio to the local AWOS and learned that there were low ceilings with visibility down to 3 nm, plus winds were 25 knots out of the South. Wasn't too good, but I I was starting to get low on fuel, so I had to land. Once I got closer, I descended into the fog, circled the airport, and landed at 0205Z. Thankfully, the winds weren't gusty so I was able to make a smooth landing. Once down, I taxied to the fuel pumps, shut everything down, and closed my flightplan.
