Mmmmm P51. The one true old warbird that gives me shivers when I see it in flight. That engine is one of a kind when you hear it fly by.

flight dynamics aren't perfect?  this is flight sim we're talking about here right? jk.   yeah, i go back and forth between the mustang and the spitfire. i guess they are both my favorite.

a little tid bit for all, the 'stang and spit' actually both sported merlin v12 production powerplants. the difference being, besides newer design mods, the spits' being built by Rolls Royce and the 'stangs being built under license by Packard here in the U.S.
but i'm sure most of you know that.

There are two types of Unlimited racers, stock and highly modified.  Dago Red is highly modified with the cropped canopy and altered engine performance.  No turboprops here, just nothing but pure radials and pistons.  "Rare Bare sounds like thunder coming off the mountains."

That whistling sound is the air over the gun ports on the Mustang.
Whilst it's not my favourite US Warbird (that honour goes to the P-47 Thunderbolt) I do love to see the Mustang at airshows.

I have to take issue with you here Tempest. I understand the characteristic "Mustang moan" is caused by the airflow through the radiator air scoop. You can always tell when the rear exit flap is adjusted correctly at full chat.

I read this in an article written by J. Leland Attwood, the vice-president of North American Aviation in 1940 who was largely responsible for what became the P-51.

Contrary to what many people appear to believe, it's mentioned in the same article that

In the event, many tests (including some in recent years) have shown the "laminar flow" wing was not developed on the Mustang wing & that the drag was probably no less than that of conventional wings of the same thickness and taper ratio.

PS. The P-51D is one of my favourite aircraft.

Merlins are nice...But I can't get over the screaming, roaring, earth-shattering rumble of the P-47's Pratt & Whitney R2800, Turbo-Supercharged, 18 cylinder air cooled radial engine rated at over 2,000 horsepower!  I don't care what you say, that is a beautiful airplane!
