Trans - Canada Adventure Leg 10

Postby Cherokee_6 » Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:02 am

After taking a some time off to go do some fishing excursions  ;) ;), I decided it was time to continue on with my trip.  ;D

The weather has definetly got colder since I landed here in Iqaluit. This morning, after I had my Tim Hortons coffee and some breakfast, I went out to the Baron to start going over pre-flight checks and the temperature was -10 Celcius! So I put on a bigger parka and filled up the thermos with real hot coffee and headed out to continue flying. (all the while reminding myself to get enough fuel for this leg! See leg 9 for details on that!  ;) )

I decided I would head up the east coast of Baffin Island to Clyde River. This would be the first gravel airstrip that I would be landing on so I double checked the pressure was ok in the tires...

As I finished packing the Baron, I could not help but notice that the winds were blowing pretty strong from the west so I knew this was going to be an interesting landing on the gravel strip if the wind was still like this at Clyde River.

Route Map Updated

Route info for this leg
Image

Lined up on Runway 35. No ATC so had to direct myself out of here. Right now the winds were 050/16 so not too bad.
Image

The terrain on this leg of the trip was very surprising. When I left Iqaluit it was flatter and very green. Only about 30 minutes into the flight I started to come across some very barren landscape and SNOW!
Image

About 50 miles from Clyde river, the ammount of snow definetly increased! I was very surprised to find some mountain ranges on this route. But needless to say they were beautiful.
Image

Upon final approach to Clyde River, the winds were still out of the west and it was rather gusty at times! I was quickly trying to figure out if the wind will make a difference in how you land on a gravel strip...(I guess I am about to find out!)  ;D
Image

I radioed down to the lone controller and asked him to take pictures of my landing in case I went "ass-over-tea-cup". But as it turned out it wasn't too bad.
Image

I thought it was odd that the temperature here (even though farther north) was 8 degrees warmer! It was -2 degrees Celcius. After I shut her down and secured the tie-downs I headed off to the Hamlet of Clyde River to go find a warm place to enjoy a Moosehead or two.!

Ha! Ha! It would be interesting to see who the actors would be! Maybe we could recruit different ones from Simv to be in it! (I guess that may give it an "R" rating then!

Looks like your just about done. I haven't had time to complete my Vimy Adventure. Things are starting to slow down though so maybe I'll pick it up again.

Actually, I am only about half way done. I am going to go up the east side of Canada and down the west coast and then back in-land to Calgary....

It would be nice to see your trip pick up again! ;D

Assuming that you meant 'Trip' not 'Trio'... ;D... I don't really know...I will finish this trip and then maybe do a North America Adventure and then we'll see...

I tried starting a round the world trip but I just don't have the time to devote to that.... :) :)
