Competition for the ultimate piston!

Postby EricK » Wed Oct 15, 2003 12:38 pm

Hi there,
Since this seems to be vintage piston day today. I figure I'd add my 2 cents. IMO - ultimate piston. Wanna race?

Of course ;). As you can see from my avatar and signature the Hawker Sea Fury FB11 is definitely my favourite plane. My nomination is ... well ... can you guess?

The Hawker Sea Fury is definately the best but in COF, the Roger Dial P-51 is by far the best for me. I could not get the Sea Fury to work well. It is funny because in FS2002, I couldn't get the P-51 to work well, but now it flys great in COF. Even the FPS is terrific.

In real life, I have no idea which is the best. I would imagine the Sea Fury is much better because it is so much newer.

Thanks
Eric

Nah, give me either one of these:

Martin Baker MB5
or
Supermarine Spiteful (494Mph (level flight @ altitude) with a RR Griffon 101.

It's just a shame both of these superb aircraft never got to see service, coming along just at the begining of the jet age.

Being an fanatic of old WW2 era airplanes... I'd say my vote is for the P-47D... although not quite as nimble as the P-51, the punch and kick that it delivered helped to rid the skies of the N's over Europe... the classic lines and power of the P-47 make it a hard plane to forget...

Sorry... I stand corrected... P-47N. ;D

i'm with ozzy on this issue.    the spitfire has the most beautiful and gracful lines of any piston fighter with the P-51 a close second.   although the seafury and tempest were superb performers,  they just don't capture the romance of spits' and 'stangs.

P.S.     EricK ... where did you find Cripes A'Mighty 3rd?

That repaint is available at flightsim.com along with 2 or 3 other nice ones. Just search for 'roger dial' under repaints.
See ya

Depends what you mean by "Ultimate". The Hawker Sea Fury was always regarded as the ultimate development in piston engined fighter design along with the Grumman F8F Bearcat. These actually saw service, unlike the Martin-Baker MB5 which only reached prototype stage & the Supermarine Spiteful which was not the success you might expect.
