Bombs released but how...?!

Postby Mr. Bones » Sun Apr 27, 2003 11:25 am

hi everyone,

here are two shots of me bombing a railyard in CFS3 with the Goblin. i dropped 2 1000kg bombs. as you see, i suck at dropping bombs...

can you guys explain me how you bomb a target. most of the time the bombs miss. is there a rule on how to do it: speeds, heights,...

Actually there is a few techniques to ground bombing, but the MOST IMPORTANT one is this:

When you release the bomb, you must be at a safe enough altitude not to get blown up by your own bomb, then you sorta have to guesstimate where the bomb WILL go with your crosshairs and your speed.
The bomb goes a little bit slower than the plane, decreasing in speed by the distance it travels, and if you go faster when you drop it, it will go farther....

i dont know if you understand this very well, but i hope i helped, just ask if you dont understand what i said  ;D ;D ;D

Ps- nice shots

As a general tip, I never bomb below 1000ft. If you're dive bombing, make sure you drop high enough to pull out at about 1000ft and you should be OK.

The best thing to do is just do free flights and get to know how the bomb physics work. (drop them, press F9 to watch the bomb before it explodes to see if it hits the target and Shift-J to re-arm your bombs)
I dont know how the metric bombs work in terms of physics.
What i tend to do in my campaign in my Tempest (2x 1000lb Bombs) is enter a shallow dive about 3km before the target with WEP, get to about 350-400mph at treetop level. Guess where the bomb is going to drop, release, watch them fall and pull back real hard on the stick, you'll black out, but should be ok. It works well cos your going so fast, you should out-pace the explosion and avoid any flak :)

With a bomber just get the target in the crosshairs and drop. Speed and altitude mean nothing with the bomb sight.

With fighters there are 2 tactics I use.

Dive bombing, get directly above the target at about 7000 feet and dive vertically on the target. when the targets in the cross hairs drop your bombs and pull out.

Low level bombing. I usually use this method in a mosquito at full throttle.
Come in on the target with bomb doors open at max speed and altitude of between 200 and 500 feet.

When you come up to the target wait intill it goes out of your view under the panel and count to 3. when you reach 3 drop your bombs and pull up sharpish. It helps to have big bombs for this method.

I rarely fail to do damage to a sitting target. In fact my bombing accuracy is 100% in the campaign.

Also note that the weight of the bomb also defines the hight you need to be to avoid damage from the explosion. If the bomb is 250lb then you need to be at 250feet at least to avoid the blast. a 500lb bomb requires and altitude of 500 feet and a 1000lb bomb requires you to be 1000 feet away to avoid damage.

Follow these rules and you shall cause some damage at least. ;D

Unusual accident there Ken. My advice is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! It took me ages to get it right in CFS3, but now I can drop one down the picklebarrel every time. Just go in on full throttle, and as you release pull back on the stick and you'll be fine. I've dropped 500s at 100 ft and got away with it. Oh and to really sprint remember to press W to engage WEP and give you some extra horses.

Mark

PS. Great shots! ;D

use 'retarded'bombs (bonbs with braking parachutes) next time of you want to be both in the 'how low can you go' and in the 'best boom for less bucks' threads at the same time

I prefer timed bombs personally. But you can get neither in CFS3 so what can you do? ;D

Thats the buetiful thing about Il-2 you can set how long you want the bomb to delay and skip the bombs across the water into the sides of ships

That is nice. But I prefer the fact that you can lay your bomb a 2 feet and fly on to turn around and watch your bomb detonate with pin point accuracy. For ships, I like either torpedos or cannon. Cause i never could get my bombs to skip...
