Its not really an external tank, its actually the planes bomb bay, it was carried externally, due to the small size of the fusealage, and can be dropped when empty for max speed away from the target.

:) ;) :D ;D

My dad once made a flight training exercise, I think UN's join exercises (late 60's) and he was that time the wingman for a B-58 (flying a Super Saber) and he said that this bird is huuuuge, noisie, sharp and the nuke pod can make us piss in the trousers LOL
I loved this model!

To expand on that Blade, the "tank" was  multi-mission, and there were several types used. The pods came in many configurations/combinations. In 1964 a flight of B-58's flew over Anchorage, Alaska using the photo recon pod. The purpose was to take pictures of the large earthquake that occured and send the pictures to the many agencies that were going to assist in clean-up/rebuild.

A bit more tidbits. The B-58 was one of the shortest lived SAC bombers, lasting from 1960-1970. A big part of its short life was because it became a "White Elephant" It was costing WAY to much to keep running. There was no trainer version for the plane so the USAF used the TF-102 (or the TF-106)as a trainer.

But what the heck, CONVAIR made a "kick-a$$" bomber that looked awesome

Kick-A$$ bomber ? you said a mouthful there 8)....look what they used a trainer version of this beauty for.......a chase plane ! ;)
Photo
Description: This photo shows XB-70A #1 taking off on a research flight, escorted by a TB-58 chase plane. The TB-58 (a prototype B-58 modified as a trainer) had a dash speed of Mach 2. This allowed it to stay close to the XB-70 as it conducted its research maneuvers. When the XB-70 was flying at or near Mach 3, the slower TB-58 could often keep up with it by flying lower and cutting inside the turns in the XB-70's flight path when these occurred.
