Early next year is the time when the Geforce 8 truely starts performing. There is no point in buying it now, unless you are a billionare or REALLY need the performance. If you don't, then it's pretty much a rip.

Think of it this way:

You release a graphics card before the API It's designed for is even out. Releasing a buggy and expensive video card, letting the competition have more time to develop their superior product.

When the new API is out (Direct X 10), the competition has already made something faster, cheaper, smaller, more innovative, and more efficiant than you. You have successfully ripped your costomers off.

Anyone playing FSX REALLY needs performance, don't you think ?

And what will happen in March ? ATI will release its new card ? Yes, and it will be as buggy as the GeForce was, and as usual you will have to wait for the set of drivers that works with this or this game, just like any other ATI card. In the end, you will have to wait at least two more months before you can enjoy the new ATI card, leading to end of May, beginning of June 2007. Of course, the ATI card at that time will be at least as expensive as the GeForce is now.

And myself, from December 2006 to June 2007, I will be enjoying the power of the new GeForce8.

See ? Everyone has its own point of view ;) Mine is quite simple: should I spend 500 euros for a NVidia now, or should I wait and spend 500 euros for a ATI in May or June 2007 ? My choice is made, with two excellent reasons.

Nope. There will be competition, so think of tons of refreshes and break neck prices LIKE the current X1950XT for $250. That's an amazing deal.

I spent $550 on a X850XT PE. I had it for a few months then the 7800 came out.

When that came out, I was NOT impressed. My $550 card had been reduced to a $180 card in a matter of months.

Same situation with the Geforce 8 / R600. You have to renember that the R600 is launching WITH Vista as far as I know. That gives them loads of time to optimize the design / drivers, redesign it,  and chuck pretty coolers on it.
