C) a question: why did the japanese name their planes after English names? i.e The 'Betty', the 'Kate', the 'Pete' etc.  ???

"Pete", was a identification code name, adopted for US aviators in IIWW, like "Zero", "Betty" etc. for japanese planes, I thing. In this way the radio calls are more fast. It

also, tocomment on the code names...for englush speaking folks is hard to pronounce certain groups of letters, and make them sound right, i speak spanish and boy is it hard for ppl who speak english to pronounce stuff in spanish properly, so let alone japanese... the japanese named their planes after mithical creatures and stuff, sometimes... and these names were very hard to pronounce and to memorise... so, which one is easier...  shidden-kai, or George?

I wonder if that plane listed to one side when at rest? Probably not I guess....

Giving the planes people's names makes sense, or at least it doesn't make nonsense But what about the Nato code names for Soviet aircraft and copters, stuff like, Hip/Hook/Harke and Cock/Clank/Cline etc. Anyone have an idea/some info tidbits about the reasoning behind this?

The soviet/Nato codenames was in the same way. In the "heattest days" of the cold war, information about real designations of soviet aircrafts was scarce. To avoid identification errors in radio transmissions the code was adopted. F for fighters (Fishbed, Flogger, Foxbat, etc), B for bombers (Bison, Bear, Badger, etc), C for transports and H for Helicopters. The words are short and phonetically easy to speak and hear.

The way i learnt it , was when they were identifying the japanese's aircraft, they used guy names for the fighters, and the girl names for the bombers,
