Its accutally not the B-2, it was designed and flown over 25 years before the B-2 left the drawing board. The XB-35 with the jet engines (I forgot what it was called) was designed to fix many of the problems with the prop version, i.e. vibration in the gear shifters. And it was designed by Jack Northrop and was to compete with the B-36 Peacemaker. Unfortunally it didn't win and no privet airline show any intrest in it and the USAF ordered the destrution of all the XB-35. Jack Northrop retired a year later, at a very young age, and didn't seem to be able to die for 25 years. Then Northrop Grumman designed the B-2 for the USAF, it was partly meant to bring back the spirit of the XB-35, both planes had the same wing span of 172', and to realize Jack Northrop's dream of a flying wing.

Regarding my previous reply, Jack Northrop died 8 (I think) month after they showed him the blue prints and models of the B-2, but he didn't live to see it take off for the first time :(

That is a very niffty model . . . I really like the detail on the gear, as most of what I run into doesn't have the right stuff . . .

:) ;) :D ;D

Stormtrooper

actually, the jet engine powered Flyin Wing was called XB-49 and for the ethernal sadness of Jackie Northrop US gov cancelled his program, when he was close to his death, they revealled the "new" flyin wing which was exactly the same measures of the original (XB-49) and fly by wire tech, avoidin the bad handling that the prototype suffered durin tests, I think 2 months later, Northrop died and said for a group of close friends that he finally understood why God kept him alive for so long, just to see his high tech birdie flyn high again, this time called B-2 a real wonder!

cya!
JUST ONE WORD: FREEWARE! The more free it is, the more shall I fly!

Nice pics Eno.,of a very unusual subject. I will have to find this one. Both the XB-35 (prop) and the YB-49 (jets) are unique and interesting planes. Jack Northrup was a very forward thinking and driven man.

An earlier version of a Northrup flying wing  can be seen at the Smithsonian. It used to be displayed at the Silverhill facility in Suitland , MD, but with the new musum at Dullus airport  it should be seen all the time. Hope to get there soon

Clear Skies,
