On My Way (Don't Know Where I'm Going) 13

Postby jordonj » Thu Jul 08, 2004 12:46 pm

Well, bad news...it seems the Lancair has developed a bit of engine trouble.  It could still fly, but I'd rather get it fixed now (and its owner agrees) while it's small and before the small problem becomes a big problem.  That means it will be grounded the next few days.

:'( >Sigh<...Well, as long as I'm here, I might as well socialize a bit.

Frank, Ruby, Sean (one of the mechanics), and I went out for lunch today.  Frank didn't comment that I wasn't drinking along with the rest of them.  We got to talking planes, exotic ones, old ones, etc.  The Piaggio came up, and I told Frank that I had had the opportunity to fly on along with another pilot back in Michigan.  Frank smiled and said "You're our boy!"

I didn't like the sound of that...

It seems that Sean, along with being a mechanic, repairs planes.  An Electra L-10A had to be delivered to Cheyenne, and a Piaggio 166S needs to be brought back.

Me and my BIG mouth  :-X :-X :-X

Well, paying work is paying work and Frank is a hard man to say no to anyways.

Sooo, I got ready to fly.  Man, Taxiing with the Howard 500 is one thing, but with this plane, all you see out the front are the Clouds.  "If you can handle my Howard 500, you can handle this."  Frank says (I wish I shared his confidence).  I took off around 5:00 pm...

The sky was clear and blue as I got further South (and higher up).  Here is one broken by the contrail of an airliner above me (I can't remember what).

A few shots of the North Platte River:

When I was on approach to Cheyenne, I forgot that I was in a larger plane.  I had to do a go-around to slow down properly.

Image

But I made it down.  I had a hard time steering the plane (until I got the tail down of course ::) )

Image

And here, I was told to hold position for other traffic (What other traffic!?)  But I stopped, half on the taxiway, where I was told while a Mooney and an Airliner stopped behind me.   After sitting there for long enough to claim squatter's rights on that spot, or turn the area into a used plane lot, I decided to to move as I was getting nervous. I'm sure the Mooney's pilot felt worse as he was sanwiched between 2 larger planes :o.  After I started rolling, I got the clearance to continue taxi (go figure! ::) )

Image

It turned out the ATC operator was new and nervous...no harm done! ;D
So, I got the plane locked down.

Tom, the mechanic was waiting for me.  It seems he follows some of these adventures.  Along with mine, he is following another one of a certain DC-3.  He had some shots to show me that he took the previous night:

"So it's an image of the plane I'm to take back to Gillette" I said.

"No," said Tom, "look in the background."

And you can see it in the forground here:

If the engine is off, and you hit the parking breaks (ctrl + . default) the chocks and covers appear.

Oh, I knew it was not you (so did Tom, though he didn't know the current owner).
