Sock Flies Europe.

Postby Sock » Thu Feb 19, 2004 2:10 pm

I had spent the last of Tuesday in Paris seeing the sights, the Effiel Tower, where an old man in broken English told me of a madman who flew under the tower just a short time ago,  ;D and everything else...

I had to spend the night in Peggy's backseat because it seemed Paris was all booked up!  I got up and ate my left-over frog legs for breakfast.  Taste like chicken! ;D

Image

I did the pre-flight, taxied to the active, and was in the air by ten.

Paris was full of planes that morning, unlike the day before, which had better weather.  Today there were broken cloulds at 5,000 feet, high altitute cirrus clouds, and light winds.

A 737 took off just after me from De Gaulle, a Mooney was in the pattern for final along with a Cessna.  I said goodbye to Paris;

Image

and as I passed by Orly Airport a 747 took off not a thousand feet below me, climbed and banked into the cloulds where I lost it.

Image

I continued to follow the Seine River south as far as it would take me.  Which wasn't very far.

Image

When I turned east to try and find the Rhone Saone River I could still see Paris on the horizon.

Image

I thought the Rhone would lead me farther than it did.  After about a hundered miles it forked east and south.  I continued  south for another fifty some miles until that too ended.

In the distance was a mountain range I hoped I could follow farther south.  The mountians were small but still capped in snow.  They rose to meet me, and I had to fly just  under the cloulds to stay 500 feet above the ground at some points.

Image

I was starting to get hungry again, frog legs aren't very filling, and I wondered when I'd reach the Mediterrainean.  Peggy and I crested the final snow covered mountain and in the distance was water, and lots of it!  Only maybe a hundered and fifty miles away.

When I reached the coast I found myself in Montpellier France.  I tuned to Montpellier tower and got permission to land.  I swung Peggy out over the sea and lined up with runway 31R.

Image

I dropped the flaps and landing gear,

and again Peggy drifted down onto the runway.

Image

I taxied her to parking near the pumps and shut shut her down.

Image

I didn't plan to stay long, just enough time to eat some lunch, get supplies, and refuel.  I wanted to see how far into Spain I could get before nightfall.

Tune in next time when I see how far Peggy can take me into Spain. :)

And heres the last few legs if you missed them:
