I watched a program about the Spitfire the other night.  Lots of interviews with veterans, some claims were made that Polish pilots would attack parachuting aircrew, I am not sure if these can be substantiated though.

The veterans interviewed about the battle of britain made it clear that they felt that they were attacking machines, not men.  I believe that this would be an effective coping mechanism to allow them to mentally survive the experience.

I am lucky that I have never been in the situation where I have been forced to kill or be killed so I will not comment on the morals of it at all, except to say that it is difficult to get your bullets on target when the target is the size of an aircraft.  Attacking a parachutist would seem to be an excersise in futility and it would not be a good idea to attack something that can do you no harm in an area with people whose main aim in life is to kill you.

Nice shots though ;D

I think in most situations aircrew would have far better things to do the try to shoot at parachutes...

Not very nice anyway

I had a member of my SF Hatchet team that was a full blooded Choctaw Indian. A man that you were EXTREMELY thankful was on your side. A man that you made sure was a good friend. This guy was on his 4th tour in Nam and he really enjoyed his job...yep...he wasn't right in the head.

Well, once on a SpecOps covert drop into a enemy control area. We were inserted via a para jump to do a snatch of a high ranking NVA officer. We were coming down and I observed him release his control lines and reach around and pull up his favorite form of enemy termination. A crossbow...he loaded it in mid air (if you know crossbows at all...this is no easy feat)....he proceeded to fire it almost straight down into a tree. Upon landing and forming up we proceeded to the tree to find an NVA sniper tacked to the tree and quite dead. The Indian had seen the glint off the scope as he attempted to target my men and guessing the man was right handed...he fired to the left. The arrow had apparently hit him directly in the heart. Needless to say....I WAS EXTREMELY IMPRESSED!
