Admrial Nelson's "Flying Sub"

Postby SabreHawk » Sun Dec 14, 2003 9:52 am

I had to have this thing, I was a big fan of this TV show as a kid(" Voyage to the bottom of the Sea").
It's ficticious of course, but fantastic none the less.
It was launched from a bay in the belly of a submarine the "Seaview" and was used for research, rescue, and other such things. Now what would be really awesome, is if it could be made to work in a game like one of the Submarine sims that im fond of, and be able to not only fly it, but take it below the waves and explore the sea too. :P
The Author has ingeniously incorperated landing gear into this model, which the sub in the show did not have.
It's a work in progress, and he has many improvements in the works im sure. :D

It's here at SimV, in the Misc. section of FS2002:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2002misc12.htm

There is a first version on that page and also an updated version on the last page.
Install the first one, then the second update.

Yeah, I like it too...........im going to contact the author and give him a report on it, and some suggestions. :)

He,hee yeah ya cant go to sea without ol "Sharky" and not to forget "Chip" either!! :D

Ya know I really was thrown back in time as I brought this thing down close to the water to land it,................was streaking along at about 50ft & 200nts.
The sight was cool to say the least, im just real happy to have it. :D

I have a plastic model kit I built of it too, I'll take a few pic's later & put'em up. 8) I think im gonna get over to the hobby shop and see what they got. Besides I havent had the chance to check this shop out since I been here in Seattle.

Well,....................so much for this and the "Seaview" being fictional. Check out this site;
http://nimr.org/index.html

Im amazed, and pleased..............it really did exist, as did Nelson, and the Seaview. look at these blueprints:
(Ok, just kidding, but it's nice to dream eh?  ;D)

:)Excelent article.
I remember Voyage to the bottom of the sea.
Did it not come out prior to the first Startrek Series?
I think Lost in Space came out about the same time.

Thanks...Cheers....Doug

He, hee yeah I thought I'd see if ya'll were awake ;D

It does sound like our system though, I could see somthing like this not making it thru the political BS like is told in the story, just like Northrop's flying wing, and probably many other things ahead of their time.  ::)
