Drive Back In Time....

Postby RollerBall » Sat Oct 25, 2003 5:45 pm

I had a dream the other night....that I got the Jag out and went for a drive....and parked on the bend in Olympic Avenue near the Aviation Club while a Gulfstream lined up for takeoff....

Image

....and then drove a bit further onto the Sung Wong Toi Road....and watched as one of those crazy looking little Mandarin 747 SPs began its takeoff run....

Image

....and then turned around and stopped for a few moments outside the Good Harvest Airfreight Centre....

Image

But it was only a dream....

....because now it's all gone.....

Hey - what are you doing over here! You're supposed to be doing Andrew's file!

Seriously Doug, I wish I could say soon. But to give an example, I'm back in design mode now and it took me last weekend and this one so far just to do what's shown below.

Image

It took today just to do the boards on top (Ace Bed and the other one) although I did get some graphics sorted out as well for 2 more buildings on the 13 approach with ads on.

If you want I'll send you the files to try out - but when I sent them to Ozzy the zip was just over 8MB and now it's a little bit bigger still.

Let me know if you'd like em

Well. I'm just kicking my heels waiting for young Andrew to get his finger out. ;)

I know the feeling only too well. This stuff is so time-consuming but satisfying when you get it right. I enjoy looking at your shots so maybe we'll leave it until it's finished. Thanks for the offer anyway. I'm not sure AOL would cope with an attachment that size. We don't all have broadband you know. :P :)

Roger,

I must say everytime you post some shots of your Kai Tak scenery, I'm more impressed every time. It's looking great and I'm glad you're taking your time to pack in the detail and do that wonderful place justice.

My hat goes off to you Roger....I can't wait!! ;D ;D

Thanks Ric - your comments very much appreciated.

For a few weeks in the summer I got a bit demoralised - couldn't see an end to the job and started thinking again that I'd taken on too much. But in a way the short break has helped because now i'm back to it again with a lot more enthusiasm.

I've got very close to the place - not surprising when you think I've trawled through literally thousands of photographs - every single one that I've been able to get on the Internet from any source I could find. And I've been trying to work as accurately as it's realistically possible to do to the ones I've used as references.

I've said it before I know, but I'm conscious of the fact that this may be the last time this place is modelled for flightsim. Almost every major feature has now gone (all of the HAECO/Swire/Cathay complex, all of the cargo terminal, all of the runway except a tiny section in what was the middle, almost all of the taxiways and the whole of the 'new' apron used by Cathay) leaving just the main terminal, the new (and still possibly the old) fire station and the Government Flying Service buildings. So I'm trying to create something that is historically accurate and hopefully recognisable to anyone who knew the place.

This will also include all of the key features in the locality of the airport, including key buildings (like the ones pictured) and the elevated road system hopefully. I've just managed to get hold of local road maps showing the layout (which is how I know road names!)

Just hope it will all be worth the effort because it could well be last thing I ever do the time it's taking!  ;D

:)

Thanks Dave

Hey you must try that Jag sometime if you haven't already. It's a killer! I thought my wife was uncontrollable, but that thing - wow!

Funny thing is I found that when I stopped, even with the engine turned off, it kept moving - hard to explain, like a wild animal!

I thought it was because I hadn't 'flattened' the road outside the airport but it was just the same inside. It was so bad that in spot view with 'gradual transition' ticked in view options, the bl**dy screen pic kept changing all the time!

:D
