Caravan in the Himalaya

nothing special, but i didn't know which plane to fly with, so i took the default Cessna Caravan. i took off at Lukla and flew to the nearest airport at dawn.
(shots look a bit blury due to resizing)

you can't see it very well, but i only had a few inches left...

Hi Guys,

Having done the flight in question for real (as a passenger, I can't pilot!) I can say it really does look pretty much like that.

My only complaint would be the lack of 'steps'. Any chance the scenery designers can get a texture that looks like the 'steps' seen on hillsides throughout the region.

This image is the second of our planes landing at Lukla.
This landing was somewhat better than ours as our pilot bounced the plane and shouted something Nepalese I can only guess was 'Oh gosh, I didn't get that quite right old chap' before bringing us to rest with what I can only describe as an emergency stop. All very exciting and that was just getting there!

i don't think this photo is taken at Lukla right? someone else posted a shot of it at the photos forum, and it didn't looked like on your shot.

or do you mean the photo you posted is the airstrip i landed with the Caravan? i think so because the house on the left looks familiar to me. (must be cool to have your house in FS if you live there) anyways it's a very nice shot, i like the Himalaya ones  ;D

Sorry Tounge_of_Colicab, it was in 1999 I went there.

When I get a chance I shall hunt around in my loft and try to confirm/ deny whether this was Lukla or another airfield.

It was carved into the side of a hill with a few hundred feet drop to the right (left in this photo) and off both ends of the runway.
Taking off was similar to how I image a handglider jumping off a hillside would be like.
The other side had a slight climb up to the village.

As I recall the house belonged to a famous (in Nepal anyway) sportsman or ex-politician, is by far the biggest house in the local area and one of only a handfull with electricity. The airport 'terminal/control tower' was much smaller and the whole village turns up when a plane lands it was fantastic.

I'll post again when I can confirm the correct location.
(By the way, I assume you are flying in FS2k2 as my Himilaya terrain is nothing like that good in FS2k).

I have searched through the loft and found what I needed. It would appear that I was wrong

The photo was taken at Phaphlu. A place about 75km South of Mount Everest.

Unfortunately, this is not one of the airfields I have FS2k so if it is in FS2k2 I would be interested to compare images.

Fantastic place to fly around anywhere in Nepal.

Hi mate,

I am afraid I am still only a beginner at this FS flying. CFS2 is more my thing and navigation by radar and airport codes is not realy necessary.

Following a quick search on the web I have found a ICAO code of VNPL.
Try http://www.ivao.org/db/ss/coun_l.asp?Id=NP or http://www.ivao.org/db/ss/airport.asp?Id=VNPL.

It is spelt without the 2nd 'H' but translation from Napelese often varies considerably.

Your shots sure look like they could be. I must get a copy of FS2k2. It looks hugely better that FS2k
