Clouds - Heavy overcast at 40,000 feet

Postby OldAirmail » Tue Aug 11, 2015 5:58 pm

First, this isn't "real weather". I couldn't find any full/heavy overcast areas last night, so I used the Major Thunderstorm setting.

And this post isn't really about the "clouds", but about high altitude, full overcast, sky coverage.

In FSX & P3d there's a limit to how far away the "full" cloud coverage will extend. I think that this is to keep your computer from crawling to a stop.

So for what it's worth here is my "full" coverage.

40,000 feet over Toronto, Canada in a Cessna 150. :o

(And yes, it did take a very long time to fly that 150 up that high :liar: )

I'm not all that sure.

Ten miles, maybe ???

But it could be twelve.

...you know me.... ;) ...

With my little Cessna 150, and that sort of cloud cover overhead, I would be sat in the airfield canteen eating bacon sandwiches and sipping cups of Tetley Tea until it cleared and was safe to go flying....(or motorcycling).....

I don't like clouds... ...!

Nice set of pics OldAirmail.

How do you get your pictures to show up as pictures and not a link ???

I tried uploading my first one today, which I successfully managed to do.
BUT, when I copied and pasted the link it gave, it didn't show the picture in my post like yours do, just a link to the picture.
When you click the link, the picture shows just fine and dandy, but I'd rather have the picture/s showing rather than a link to them.
Where am I going wrong please ? :?

PS. Are you using REX for your cloud textures because they look mighty fine to me ?
I'm currently using Prepar3D v2.4 and REX4 Textures Direct plus Soft Clouds. :D

I've managed to work out how to post screenshots now with the help of a few of you guys here on the Forums.
Basically, I wasn't copying the whole link correctly. :?
Must be getting old !!

Thanks, Blue.
Glad you like the pics and the clouds.

Essentially, I use two REX products just for their texture.

I use OpusFSI to put mealtime weather into my flights.

I think that using ASN & Opus together, at the same time, changed the way that the clouds are displaying.

I say "I think" because I can't find anyone who wants to try the same thing. It's not hard, and both programs can be used free as a demo.

I must be one of the few people who didn't like standard FSX/P3d clouds. :confusion-shrug:

The clouds in the link using Opus and AS together look absolutely fabulous.
I'd never have thought to try both together !
I just use Opus though, it gives me just what I want without being too heavy on my PC's resources.
I've tried all sorts of weather programmes in my many years of flight simming, but Opus is the one and only for me now.
Just as Prepar3D is my chosen simulator now, after using FSX solely since if first came on the market.
Mind you, I have to say that Dovetail Games have done a sterling job on FSX since taking over so to speak.
After using FSX-SE I'd never contemplate going back to the boxed version again, that's just my humble opinion though.
Horses for courses as they say.

I use Opus also.

What I did was to download ASN and run it as a demo. Once the time limit expired, I uninstalled it.

I'd really like to see if someone else comes up with the same results that I have.

BTW - both programs are very FPS friendly. When I ran them together, I didn't notice a slowdown.

Thanks, Chuck.

But, actually, I cheated there.

That Cessna 150 can't really get up to 40,000 feet.

Not on it's own, anyway.

I had to use JATO
