The Rock of Gibraltar was one of the Pillars of Hercules and was known to the Romans as Mons Calpe. To the Phoenicians, it marked one limit of the known world. Today, it is a Crown property of the United Kingdom, bordering Spain and marking the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula.
RAF Station Gibraltar, adjacent to the monolith, served and continues to serve as a base of operations for the Royal Air Force. Here, a Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R1 circles for approach.
(Interesting side note -- the runway of RAF Gibralter, now used by civilian airlines as well as the Royal Air Force, intersects Gibraltar's main road. Ground traffic is interrupted for every takeoff and landing!
