Doomed Flight

Postby JakesF14 » Tue May 18, 2010 1:24 am

Well , this flight was doomed from the start...

While pushing back at PE airport, requesting takeoff clearance, the ATC denied takeoff clearance because of thick fog. Well, Why the L not, I asked myself... I have a 747, reliable equipment, ect..
Lined up with the runway, I push a bit back, as I am not familiar with the length of the runway..
Announce takeoff.. Going through the checklist...flaps set. AP set. Course Set ect.... Throttle up before releasing the brakes. 80kts readout... V1..... Oh there is the end of the runway already??? WTF!

I made it barely! pheww. Positive rate of climb. Gear up. Flaps to zero.... Activate AP. Sit back, hand off radar contact.. Now where is my coffee.
The rest of the flight was bumpy, but normal. But then all went wrong.
First, the George ATC direct me straight in, after I already planned my descent over the sea. OH boy, so I am way too high. I have to make a 360 over the sea. Speed down to 220KIAS. decent rate to 2000 ft/min. Spoilers to bleed the speed off. On the downwind leg..Speed down to 200 KIAS. Flaps 1 notch down. Alarms sounding... stick shaking... nose pitch sharp as the AP try to maintain altitude, but with the spoilers I forgot to retract, and the flaps extended simultaneously, the Boeing 747-400 is already in so bad stall, I couldn't do anything but watch as the 747 hits the water ...

What I've learned...NEVER DISOBEY THE ATC!

Sounds like you gave up to easy. All you had to do was KICK IT UP A NOTCH into after burner(all -400 have this)and BAM! You recover! Just like flying an apartment to has marks. :P

Great Pics. ;)

Now that would certainly make world headlines!

Speaking of obeying ATC... I have had ATC direct me to land on a runway of which after touchdown I realised a 777 was taxiing across the runway... and unfortunately my 747 didn't make it >:( Neither did the 777 for that matter  ::)

I was landing at San Fransisco Intl the other day and completely ignored the Boeing 737 taxing across the runway. It just barely missed hitting me as I zoomed down the runway.

When I first got a camcorder in the late 80s, I was at KSTL's viewing area and caught a runway incursion that happened almost just like the one you described, on video. :o

Ended up being on a local news feature a few years later when they were doing a series on ATC (in)competence.

If you wanted clearance, couldn't you have just filed an IFR flight plan?

I went outside once. The graphics weren't all that great.

Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.

Oh come on........if you're gonna go out like that, then a 747 will C&B in a much grander fashion than anything else. :o

Except maybe a Galaxy or a BUFF. 8-)

I'm just sayin'. :D

Jakes was not actually controlling the craft, he was co-pilot to Capt. Sully (USAir flight that went down in the Hudson..) all lives were spared.  :) [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

I was taking off at Dallas Ft worth Texas one time I was cleared for take off and nearly had a Air collusion with an Aircraft landing on one of the other runways that was in my flight path short after take off. in real life my wings would have been blown completely off from the trust of the other aircraft. that's how close we where.
