It was taking off with quite a bit of tail wind...

...but what caused him to do that is a mystery. ::)

Edit: Actually, that bird's got a long way to go. I don't know how often they use 737's for a route like that, but the pilot might not have wanted to risk that bump at the end end of R 10.

Hehe, you may be right, though even if there were a tailwind, it does not appear to be that strong with the way the tourists appear to walk so casually on the beach.  Well, just my supposition anyway.

I think it was just a bit heavy, why would you want to take off with a tail wind?...

737-700 takeoff roll at MTOW: 8,283 feet
SXM runway length: 7,107 feet


Although I doubt it was at the maximum takeoff weight, since St. Maarten to Newark is only 1,400nm and the 737-700's range is 3,900nm. It probably wasn't carrying a full tank of fuel.

Well, judging by the ballcap guy's shirt, the prevailing wind was at least 10-15 knots.

why would you want to take off with a tail wind?...


No idea, but there is a hill at the end of the other runway. If the plane is anywhere close to its MTOW, I wouldn't wager my life on its climb performance...

...and TNCM-KEWR is more around 1700nm great arc distance. Yes, its doable in a 737, but that flight is much better suited for a 757.

As I guess, the perhaps the pilot wanted to buzz the beach. The rotation seemed slower than usual, at a lower pitch.
