Playing with FSX, some demo shots

Postby simonmd » Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:51 pm

No, i've not taken the plunge but have downloaded the free Demo version from the MS website to have a look myself. All I can say is WATER! It's pretty damn good, not quite photo quality yet but pretty damn good!

Found this nice DH6 Otter for FSX as the default demo AC don't (strangely) include a seaplane,

Note the cloud reflections, nice!

Terrain and autogen set to max, very nice indeed,

Look at the FPS however!  :o

Time to put her down again,

This feels SO real. Can't wait until I can afford a rig good enough to run it properly!

Not bad.. I may suggest sliding some settings to the left though. ;)

Haha, true.  That's the first thing I thought when I saw 4 fps.  The reflections are pretty awesome I must say, even for the clouds is nice, unfortunetly it's a fps sucker, but hey, makes for good shots  ;)

Very nice shots. You can handle 3-4 fps IF you want the most beautiful screenshots, otherwise, why bother?  ;)

I have found that WATER is probably the biggest fps sucker in the sim, next to Autogen.

For me, there were and are four areas to play with. Water, Autogen, Scenery Complexity and Clouds.  One setting is not going to be great fro all areas of flying.

Great screen shots, and from the Demo too!

Indeed! This was really just to see how good it could look. It was actualy surprisingly flyable once i'd put the settings down BUT it then looked no better than a decent FS9 set up!

HOWEVER, there are still things about FSX that really impress me that I didn't know about before. Such things like the tower view resets to the nearest airport so you can have a tower view of landing as well as takeoff. The aircraft view seems to be similar to products like 'walk and follow', ie. doesn't have to be centered on AC to get more interesting angles. 'Inertia movement' in the VC, when you bank or slow down, etc. your viewpoint and the surrounding VC move slightly giving a much better sence of movement.

Also, the 'Round Earth' model is a great improvement on the FS9 flat ground. At very high altitudes, the curviture of the Earth could clearly be seen and after putting the F136 aircraft into it and managing to get to 80,000 ft, the sky above went black and stars could be seen. Very cool!

I've just got to wait until my hardware can catch up now...... :'(
