hey all,

I just wanted to ask you all a little question, which has bugged me ever since i've been on the forum...  ::)

Whenever i take screenshots, and save them on Irfanview the filesizes tend to get abnormally big.  even now with the contest i cant pick my favourite screens because 95% of them i just simply too large, especially the ones with parts of the scenery included... so does anybody know how to get the file sizes smaller, and not ruin the quality of the picture, or another program which does not create the file sizes so big  ???  anyway all your help will be widly appratiated, and if there are others with the same problems im having, you could help them out at the same time  ;D

oh yes, and this would also help me not getting told off my the admin for posting too many oversizes...  ::)

Download the mentioned Grab Clip Save.  After you get it downloaded go to its settings under output make sure it is on .jpg files and if bigger shrink to, 800x600.  Assign a folder or directory for your screenies to be stored and start taking pics.  Use the Print Screen button to take them.  If there still to large go to Jpeg options and set the slide to a max of 3/4 to keep them under 100kb.  Hope that helps! mojavepilot

Yeh get clip grap save then put the correct size in and it will do the rest for you.

I know it's not a tremendously common program, but I use Adobe Photoshop because I can constrain the properties of the screenshot when I change the size of the file.  It's pretty simple to use.

As a screenshot taking device I use FSscreen, There is a newer version Of FSscreen called Yaffscreen here on simv but that failed on me a few times so I dumped it again.

Anyway whenever I take screens with Fsscreen it saves them as 3+mb bmp files. After I convert them with Irfanview about 90% comes out well under or at least under 100kb. My last comp entry was about 65kb which was a record in filesize for me, others were between 18 and 35 kb

Am I the only one that just uses plain and simple MS Paint? Press 'Print Screen' on the keyboard, job done. If it needs resizing I use Picture It Express which comes with MS Works.

Hey thanks guys.. i really appreciate it!!!!! i'll keep things open and try several tips (including others i got fromm friends which were pretty much the same...)  ;D  And i hope this has helped otyhers aswell... not only me!

I use one called snapshooter, and when you go into the options you can choose what filename to save it as, bmp, jpg, etc, and also you can choose the size for the screenshot, which is set at 800x600

I use grabclipsave to capture the pics and photoshop CS to resize them (save for web is very usefull)

If you let GCS resize your pics the quality often is terrible, Photoshop does a much better job on that.

As for the filesize : it depends on the level of detail in your pic.  The more detail, the bigger the filesize and the more compression you'll need.

For the shots I use Rapid Shot. The trial version will let you take up to 10 shots - which is more than enuff. Then I just resize and save the jpgs at a slightly higher compression rate and voilagetting them under 100k or smaller is easy! Takes less than a minute each.
