I wouldn't say that, The Hornet essentially replaced the tomcat because it could perform more roles and is more manueveral then the cat. It is also way less cost efficient to maintain than the cat. Who knows what the future of stealth fighter jets will unleash on us.
The Tomcat may be going out of service as a US aircraft. But I am sure they will be sold to some other country and they will be modified into a totally new aircraft!
im not fighting with you by this, but the tomcat out performs the Super Hornet which is what is really replacing the Tomcat. Tomcat can track simultaneous targets from over 100 miles away. Only aircraft that can or HAS carried the Aim-54 Pheonix Long Range Missile. Super Hornet may be more manouverable, but that doesnt matter anymore, range of missiles is whats going to determine dogfights, close range, yea i take the super hornet prolly, but long range, nothing beats it, and to the cost to maintain each aircraft, the Super hornet is costing more than originally thought and is closing in on the same maintence costs.
