RTW Leg 2

Started this flight at around 11:30, didn't finish it until around 5:30. Such a long time to go such a short distance.

Lined up on runway 7 at Mitchell (KHSE), North Carolina

Found out that I could bump the settings up a little more and still get 15fps. I have clouds now!

The stunning VC. Everything but the throttle, prop, and mix are clickable and tooltiped.

Contrails look good too.

On the ground at Melbourne Intl. (KMBL), Florida. Just south of Kennedy Space Center.

Finnally some rest after a 6 hour flight.


Next hop is probably going to be a bit shorter. I haven't decided weather I want to go along the Gulf coast or if I should head east at Cuba and follow the Antilles to South America. If I go west I'll stop at Miami, if I go east, who knows.

The green X is about where I started (Millville Municipal, Millville, New Jersey). The blue arrows indicate direction. And the green arrow is about where I am now (Melbourne Intl. Melbourne, Florida).

Wow! I'm currently on an RTW myself (started in June) using the default Mooney Bravo and my route is nearly the same (with a few differences). I went up into Alaska and then down to the southern tip of Australia, cut across Asia to East Africa, down to the Cape Town, South Africa, and all the way up the African, European coast (with a stop in the Alps). Right now I'm in Reykjavik, Iceland (BIRK), and I still gotta get down the east coast of the Americas and into Antartica before coming up the west coast. It's been a long 6, nearly 7 months, but after it's all done it certainly will be a big accomplishment in a single-prop aircraft! Go for it and good luck!

That's even longer than I planned to go!!  :o
I sort of gave up on it when I crashed south of Delhi in a Howard 500.  :-[

Anyway, good luck in your Maule, try not to crash!

I started a RTW trip once in a learjet.... dunno what happened, I think that was the time when I got the PSS A330 so I went off and flew that instead!  ;D

I almost did. When I landed at Mitchell to end my first leg, I have never landed anything smaller than a F-16 before, and the only taildragger I ever landed successfully was the DC-3. I came in a little fast, 110kts and the runway is only about 2600' I cut the throttle to try to kill airspeed and it worked. I landed with only about 500' to spare and was still going 80kts. Naturally I did what I would have done in my jet flying days, slam on the brakes, I forgot that if you do that in a taildragger you do a nosedive. I started to flip, realized that this wasn't going to work pushed the throttle all the way in and went around for another attempt. I landed safely on the second time, but wasn't too happy when I didn't see any gas stations around. I took off yesterday on my way to Melbourne with only half full aux. tanks, still had plenty of gas left when I landed though.

I'm also afraid that I might miss Iceland. How far is it from that island northwest of Scotland to Iceland? I have about 850nm of range.

The distance between Inverness and the southern tip of Iceland is about 560nm, you'll have plenty of fuel to make it across that small portion of the Atlantic And even if you keep going on to Reykjavik (about 650 nm), the capital of Iceland, you would still have enough fuel to make it over there.
