Soaring, Nantucket, and being Norty

Postby jordonj » Mon Oct 18, 2004 9:01 am

Well the weather was total crap on Saturday, so I was forced to do non-flying stuff (join the real world as DeeDee would put it :P)  Tasting wine, taking tours, etc. (Borring!!!)

Sunday, the weather improved.  A couple who are friends of Russel and DeeDee, David and Gabrielle (a.k.a. Gabby) had invited us to Nantucket with him (double-ick :P :P), so I slipped away to this location...

Image

Don't look at me like that!  I left them a message (I..uh, didn't hear David's invitation, yeah!  That's it!  I didn't hear the invitation!  Yeah, yeah...dat's da ticket!) ;D

Okay, so I'm being "norty" again...;D

Also, I was not going to pass up a chance to soar in one of these again!

Image

While I was waiting, I saw one of these come down...

And park...(by then I was already taxing to the runway, a good thing too!)

Image

...because I saw DeeDee and Russel get out (of the Beechcraft Voplar), while David climed out of the pilot's seat (they didn't tell me David had one of...those!)

And here I am at about 4000'-5000'.  I figured that was high enough to stop the engine and soar for a bit!

Gabby got these shots as I soared above them (they decided to get something to eat as they were going to wait for we anyways...)

Well after this point, I found that this plane was a heck of a lot harder to land that the one I flew in Wyoming (this being a taildragger and not a tricycle).  It took me 3 tries...the wind being a kind that was a crosswind no matter which runway you went on didn't help either...

Well I expected DeeDee not to talk to me again, but when I got the Diamond parked, she came running up to me, threw her arms around me and was babbling.  Saying things like "Ahm so glad yore saife" and "Ahm sarry for every mean thing ah evah said to ya".  Her Southern twang gets more pronounced when she's upset and I can understand maybe one word out of every 10 she says when it gets real strong.

Evidentily she thought I was having engine trouble as the motor kept stopping and starting.  I tried to tell her that this was the idea, but Russel stopped me.   Apparently, she had been standing wide-eyed, hands over her mouth, just petrified that I was going to crash.  "Best not to spoil her sense of drama," he told me later.

I'm going to have to take her up in one of these, if I get the chance! ;D

Heeeeneyways, we all got into Dave's Voplar (he even let me take the controls) and headed to Nantucket.  This shot was from an employee at the airport who will take a shot for $10 and e-mail it to you.

And a couple of shots around the Nantucket Airport.

So we got something to eat and then we went The Rastrelli Cello Quartet.  That night DeeDee did a Karaoke to some country song (dunno which artist, probably Shania Twain)...she actually won an i-pod!

More to come!

Drummmm Rolll

NoNodes!

I know that some of it is available here though...

The thing about No Nodes is that they have a great scenery lookup system.

Gotta take the good with the bad...
