The Mice at Play!

Postby jordonj » Fri Oct 08, 2004 9:52 pm

Well, I wasn't able to get away from shopping with Russel and DeeDee (more DeeDee, as far as Russel is concerned, his wife's the boss...as Mick Jagger would say).  I did get some shot of DeeDee with new clothes, but she almost smashed my camera when she found out I meant to post them here.

Well, today we went to antique stores (at least not shopping for clothes again...that really sucked :P) then came back to the hotel.  Russel and DeeDee went back to their room for a "nap"...put it to you this way; if I were their son instead of a family friend, I would have had to watch Chico and the Man or something Loud.  ;D

Well the "nap" gave me a chance to check out the strip behind the lodge (without DeeDee's interference! 8))

The strip behind the lodge is a difficult one to land on due to the landscape behind it.  (Tom had a couple of aerial shots on slide and let me scan them).

Here is the view from runway 15.  Few pilots can even land from this direction.

Image

Most come in almost perpendicularly from runway 15.  In order to land here, since it is a private runway, Tom must test you, and he will only do so if you have over 5000 hours.  He also has to qualify the plane you are in.  If the wind is wrong, the runway is closed.  And if you land without his authorization, you're likely to loose both your plane and your license!

Image

I caught this old Ryan coming in.  I didn't get a shot of it on the ground.

Image

Later, I saw this clipped wing (they didn't come into land though)...

Image

By the time this Piper Pacer came along, I got a shot of it on its way in.

Turning on base leg...

And after it was parked!

Later I saw another Piper Clipped wing come in and land.

Image

And I had to get it parked!

Image

The last plane I saw was this Beechcraft.  Tom knew the pilot and the plane ended up not landing.

Image

They ended up diverting to Bar Harbor.  Tom didn't seem surprised.  "I didn't think that one could make it, but that pilot always has a plan B" he said.
