sadly the tomcats due to leave service 2007, it will leave a huge gap in air superiority but it is also a very old aircraft that has served its time very well

Great shots:)

Tomcats are very expencive planes to fly and mantain. On top of that, the AIM-54C Phoenix missles that they carry are the most expencive air-to-air weapons in the world. The Navy was looking for something cheaper, and the new breed of super hornets was the answer. However, they still can't match the F-14 in range or tracking capabilities.

I wonder if this will also be the end of the Pheonix---the missle with the longest range in the world. Only the Tomcat can carry them.
